While completing our BookChirp Reviews, we rate a novel based on the Plot, Character, Theme, Style, Setting, Audience, and the Author's Purpose. Highlighted in blue are examples of the questions we use when reviewing a book.
The Story's Plot
- Introduction, climax, conclusion?
- Mystery, suspence?
- From what point of view is the story written?
- Is there character development?
- Is the character presented realistically?
- Is the character flat or round? Static, stock, or dynamic?
- Are the protagonist/antagonist presented clearly?
- What is/are the major theme(s)?
- How are the themes revealed and developed?
- Is the theme traditional and familiar or new and original?
- Is the theme psychological or social?
- Is the writing simple, clear?
- Does the writing include humor, wit, or satire?
- Are there stylistic devices? (Symbolism, motifs, allegory?)
- Is the dialogue effective?
- What is the setting and does it play a significant role in the book?
- Does the setting influence the character(s)?
- Who is the intended audience?
- Does the content of the book suit the audience?
- What is the author’s purpose? Does he or she achieve it?
- What is the author's main goal?
